Meet our July student of the month, Kathy Wells. A senior preparing to head to college in the fall, Kathy dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse at a children’s hospital someday.
My ICA Story
I started at Ignite Christian Academy in the fall of 2014. Two years ago, I was dealing with several health issues that made a typical classroom setting challenging for me. My mother researched various homeschooling options, and we selected ICA for its Christian focus and the fact that it is an accredited program that provides teacher-graded projects and exams. I am happy to say that my health is now much better, and I will be going away to college in the fall.
Distance Learning Surprise
When I first started studying at ICA, I was surprised by the depth of education that many of the faculty possess. Some teachers have doctorates, so I feel that I am getting college-level challenges already.
The Best Thing about ICA
I enjoy the flexibility that distance learning gives me. This past year, I was able to get a job at my church’s after school program where I worked with grade-school age children. Because of my distance learning plan, I was able to be at the church helping the adult teachers set up for the afternoon before anyone from the local public school was available to help.
Favorite Subjects
I like all health science related subjects. I have been interested in health and biology since I was in grade school. In the summer of 2013, I was selected to participate in a “Teens Experiencing Nursing” camp at a hospital in Springfield, Illinois. It was the best week of my life. I left that program knowing that I wanted to pursue a career in nursing, so I have tried to take as many courses as possible in high school that will prepare me for nursing school.
Dream Job
I would love to be a pediatric nurse at a children’s hospital. I want to be a nurse and help people heal, and I would especially like to work with young children. Being sick and in a hospital can be scary when you are young. I have been fortunate to have had some very kind nurses when I was ill, and I want to help other children now that I am well.
Family Life
I have a fraternal twin sister and a younger brother. Although my sister and I are twins, we don’t look much alike. However, I look a lot like my mother’s youngest sister. Some people at my grandparents’ church get my aunt and I confused.
In our free time, my sister and I like to go shopping and to Starbucks. My brother and I take our dog on walks around the lake by our house. All of us are involved in our church’s youth group.
Hobbies & Activities
In my own free time, I like to bake cupcakes, snapchat with friends, and play with my dog, Samson. I also participate in Irish dancing. I fell in love with it when I saw an Irish dance show at Busch Gardens when I was five. I have been dancing since grade school, and I have been to two live performances of Riverdance. I also participate in Irish dance competitions. At my most recent competition in Milwaukee, I won four medals. The accomplishment in life that I am most proud of is placing in every dance I entered at my first big Irish dance competition in Chicago.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know Kathy! Look for our next student of the month feature in August.
