Our January student of the month is Lexie Russell, a junior at Ignite Christian Academy who has grown up along the banks of the Colorado River of Texas. Lexie was nominated by her teachers for her work ethic that has led to success both in the classroom and at rodeos, as well as her commitment to exhibiting a Christ-like character in all that she does.
My ICA Story
My family researched many homeschool academies when searching for a school that would allow me more time with my hobbies. I am passionate about the sport of rodeo, and I have 19 horses at home. A few of my rodeo friends use Ignite Christian Academy. ICA seemed like a great school to advance my education, while allowing a flexible schedule to work with my horses.
Global Learning
I enjoy meeting students from all around the world. I think it is neat how we are all learning from the same program with the same teachers, but we are so far away from each other. Being in an online classroom with students in Spain, Russia, and Switzerland is pretty amazing.
At a Rodeo
I like to spend all of my free time working with my horses. Rodeo is my passion, and I spend many hours putting in the work necessary to better myself. At a rodeo, I compete in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, and team roping.
Applying Knowledge
My favorite subject is science because I enjoy relating what I learn in my school work to real life situations, especially with my animals. I have definitely learned how to get business done! With horses, if you’re not progressing with them, then you’re going in the other direction. With my school work, I have learned to use my time to work diligently and stay focused to get work done at a high level in a timely manner.
I am also in my local 4H chapter, which allows me to learn more about agriculture and animals. It also provides me with opportunities to volunteer in my community.
Being a Role Model
I give riding lessons to many young cowgirls with big dreams. I am honored to be a role model for these girls and do my best to set the ultimate example for them. I have had the pleasure to work with a few of these young cowgirls for several years and watch them grow and mature. I take pride in watching them succeed and grow into respected young women. I am also a huge supporter of the Special Kids Rodeo put on by the Texas High School Rodeo Association. This rodeo benefits the less fortunate children and allows them to play and interact with their favorite cowboys and cowgirls.
My Dream Job
I dream of being a World Champion barrel racer. The work required to get to that level is a great amount, and I am excited every day to put in a little step towards that great amount.
My Sister
I have a sister who just graduated from college and has now been accepted into dental school. We are best friends and like to do anything together! We like to fish and play basketball (she played college basketball so she usually beats me). Sometimes she’ll ride horses with me, even though she doesn’t enjoy it as much as I do.
Words of Wisdom
Enjoy the opportunities that ICA has given us! We are all blessed to be a part of this program, so let’s make the most of it.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know Lexie! Look for our next student of the month feature in February.
