Describe yourself as a person.
I am a precocious 15-year-old who likes to stay busy and plan for the future.
What led you to enroll at Ignite Christian Academy?
In 2010 my parents pulled me out of traditional public school and decided to homeschool. After mixing and matching many curriculums, I had a hard time learning algebra and decided I wanted teacher support. When looking for an online academy in 2012, I was planning to become a veterinarian someday. Even though I've changed my decision since then, I thought the fact that ICA is accredited would make going to college easier.
What is your favorite part of being an online student?
I am a night owl, so ICA works perfectly with my schedule. I am able to stay up late, get up mid-morning, and still complete all of my school work. I also enjoy ICA due to the fact that I'm not in a "system." I am able to work at my own fast pace and I do not have to wait for other students to catch up or turn in papers.
Is there anything you've encountered while studying at ICA that has surprised you?
While taking some of ICA's business classes, I was surprised how much I already knew. I am also surprised and thankful that my education coordinator, Kristy, has stuck with me and supported me the entire journey. She has worked with me to schedule all my courses and is always fast to respond to any questions I have. I highly recommend her to anyone!
Your education coordinator describes you as a "smart and dedicated young woman." What motivates you to work so hard toward your goals?
I am motivated every time I tell my friends I am graduating early. My family and friends are very supportive, and that alone is enough encouragement for me.
What sparked your interest in becoming a birth and postpartum doula?
I have always enjoyed babies and little kids, and I also enjoy serving people. A doula is often described as "an advocate without a voice." I have always been passionate about standing up for what someone wants. When I found out about doulas, I instantly fell in love with the job. I am so blessed to be able to provide support, encouragement, and information to expecting moms and their families to help them make informed decisions.
You're currently working toward becoming a certified birth and postpartum doula. What is the certification process like, and what steps do you have left to complete?
There are many steps to take to become certified through DONA International. The first was to start reading books, specifically The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin. After I read the book, I attended a birth workshop in March 2013 and a postpartum workshop in April 2013. I also took a lactation class and became CPR certified. To finish my certification, I must attend three births and serve three postpartum clients. I must also graduate high school before I can submit my certification papers. In addition to The Birth Partner, I also read several other books, including a few essays, several birth stories, and a paper on The Purpose and Value of Labor Support.
What are your future plans and goals?
In late April I am taking a Lamaze workshop, followed by the board tests in October. Then I will be a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE). At the end of the year I plan on attending workshops to become a breastfeeding educator through the state.
Describe your hobbies and interests.
I love birth and anything related to it. I also love reading, especially the Bible. I like to crochet, sew, bake, and cook. I love all animals except reptiles.
Are you involved in any local clubs or activities?
I did tae kwon do for four and a half years, and I was on a swim team for a year. Currently, I am focusing on my business and finishing school.
If you could offer a bit of advice to fellow ICA students, what would it be?
Spend all your time on school work. Work ahead and do as much as possible. While you're still young, focus all your energy on nothing else except ICA. Not only will you be smarter, but you will also graduate early.
What would others be surprised to learn about you?
I have been a veterinary technician for two years. After I joined ICA, I started working at a local vet clinic and decided I was happy as a technician, but would rather be a full time doula than a veterinarian. I also decided not to go to college. I would rather start my life debt free and be doing something I love.
